CAF Champions League draw favours Mamelodi Sundowns

Sundowns will lead the cast of South African clubs in the CAF interclub competitions draw with the PSL champions enjoying a bye from the first round.

The Brazilians will come up against the winner of the first-round preliminary round tie between Volcan Club de Moroni from Comoros and La Passe FC (Seychelles).

In their only previous appearance in this competition Volcan Club met Kaizer Chiefs in the preliminary round of the 2016 edition losing 4-0 at home before failing to arrive for the second leg and thus handing AmaKhosi a walkover.

La Passe have also only ever played in the Champions League once before coming stuck in the first round of the 2010 edition

The Brazilians will be favoured to proceed into the group stages just like they have done in the last seven years.

Sundowns have made a statement with their signings indicating that they are aiming to pocket the USD 2,5 million (approx. R41,5 million) prizemoney on offer for the champions plus further earnings in both the CAF Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

The second South African representatives in the Champions League – Cape Town City – will have to deal with AS Otoho of Congo in the first preliminary round.

Should they get past that awkward challenge presented by the Congolese then they meet either Associacao Black Bulls of Mozambique or Angolans Petro de Luanda in the second round.

The Angolans knocked Sundowns out in the quarter-finals last season.

In the Confederations Cup Marumo Gallants will enjoy a first-round bye while Royal AM will have a meet Mbabane Highlanders from Eswatini in that entry level round.

Gallants will enter in the second round with a date against either PWD Bamenda from Cameroon or Elgeco Plus of Madagascar.

If Royal AM get past Mbabane Highlanders, then ZESCO United from Zambia will be waiting.

The preliminary round dates for both competitions have been set for 09 – 11 September / 16 – 18 September 2022 (Home/Away) for the first round.

The second-round dates have been slotted in for 07 – 9 October / 14 – 16 October 2022 (Home/Away).

For the Confederation Cup there will still be a play-off round against teams eliminated in the Champions League second preliminary round.
