Mailula double keeps Downs top in CCL group

Cassius Mailula continued his fine form for Mamelodi Sundowns, who registered a 3-1 win over Coton Sport in CAF Champions League action on Friday evening.

The DStv Premiership were without star striker Peter Shalulile, who was replaced by Thapelo Morena in the attack alongside Cassius Mailula.

Sundowns asserted their dominance ten minutes in as a mis-placed pass across the area fell straight to Mailula, who made no mistake by netting his 11th of the season and second in a row in the group stages.

Masandawana bagged a second goal a minute later when a smooth passing ended with Khuliso Mudau helping Morena's flick-on over the line.

Coton Sport received a good chance to cut the deficit minutes later off a header by Brawdon Eno, but he nodded against the upright with Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams rooted.

Williams was eventually beaten when the host pounced on a loose ball and fed Patient Wassou down the right before slotting into the far corner on the half-hour mark.

Despite having the lead reduced, the host still made a substitution two minutes later and introduced Sylvestre Materne Mekong for Eno.

The Brazilians bagged the third goal a few minutes before halftime though, with Mailula applying a strong finish from a defence-splitting pass by Aubrey Modiba. 

Sundowns went searching for a fourth goal just after the break through a snap effort from a clever angle by Neo Maema, but he couldn't pick out the target.

The host replied minutes later and came close to grabbing a second goal of their from a point-blank strike in the area, but Williams produced remarkable reflexes.

Masandawana responded once again were inches away from extending their lead in the match as Mudau slammed a reverse pass from Morena against the upright from a decent angle.

The Brazilians were able to see out the remaining stages of the second half, with the likes of Bongani Zungu and Gift Motupa brought on in the latter stages.

The win sees Sundowns cement top spot in Group B, with Al Ahly set to kick-off their campaign against Al-Hilal on Saturday afternoon.
