Ruthless Sundowns advance to CAF CL group stages

Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed La Passe FC 8-1 on Friday evening and secured their spot in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Masandawana rang the changes after their dominant 7-0 victory in the first leg last week, with Reyaad Pieterse, Mosa Lebusa, Bongani Zungu and Lebohang Maboe getting recalls.

Sundowns were ahead on seven minutes as Thapelo Morena brought down a cross-field ball from Gaston Sirino and slotted in at the near post for his first goal of the season.

Maboe was the closest to getting a second goal for Masandawana within the half-hour mark when he struck the woodwork from a tight angle and thereafter went close again with a shot at the far post.

La Passe, however, pulled one back over seven minutes to halftime after Florent Rajaoassy arrived in the six-yard area and headed into the near post.

The Brazilians were back ahead in no less than seconds when young Cassius Mailula picked up a low cross from Mkhulise and back-heeled into the bottom corner from close-range.

Mailula snatched a brace on the cusp of halftime after he once again glanced in at the near post and found the back of the net via his chest.

A trio of changes from the DStv Premiership champions came ten minutes in the second half, as Haashim Domingo, Neo Maema and Surprise Ralani entered.

The Brazilians continued to look for more against the team from Seychelles, but lacked the final instinct in front of goal with Abdelmounaim Boutouil on for his debut and Gift Motupa brought on too.

Sundowns made it five following the last 20 minutes after Maema ran in from the right and cutback for Motupa to slam in at the near post from an acute angle.

Masandawna grabbed a sixth on the night later on when Domingo attacked a ball from the right by Morena and volleyed home.

La Passse's woes continued minutes before time as Maema met a knockdown from Lebusa in the area and drilled in at the far corner.

Masandawana compounded the visitors outing with full-time in sight after Mailula sneaked in the six-yard area and fired home.

The Brazilians capped off a fine evening's work in added time when Motupa pounced on a low pass from Domingo and slotted in comfortably to bring the clash to a close.
