Sundowns run riot over Swallows

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Mbabane Swallows in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round first-leg on Saturday evening.

Masandawana showed full debuts to Iqraam Rayners, Asekho Tiwani and welcomed back goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Lebohang Maboe and Rivaldo Coetzee to the line-up.

Tiwani made his presence felt in the opening two minutes where he went down in the area to win a penalty and saw Lucas Ribeiro fired in comfortably to make it 1-0.

Sundowns attempted a second in the space of minutes through new signing Arthur Sales following a quick one-two with Ribeiro, but he was denied from point-blank range.

It got worse for the men from Eswatini all in the opening 20 minutes when Mosa Lebusa rose above a number of challenges in the box to nod in a pin-point corner-kick.

Brazilian-born Sales didn't get to finish the clash around the half-hour mark due to a knock he picked up and was stretchered off the field to see Thapelo Maseko come on for him.

The situation mattered little though as Rayners added a third when he found space in the area to bring a low cutback in his stride and drilled in the bottom-corner.

It continued to be a one-way traffic later on as Masandawana threatened again where Maboe came short to the box following a reverse pass and hit the base of the upright.

Sundowns didn't drop momentum and extended the lead in the opening five minutes of the second exchanges as Ribeiro picked up a perfectly weighted layoff from Maboe to nestle in the far post.

Masandawana remained on the front-foot despite enjoying a healthy lead and missed the opportunities for more through substitutes Kobamelo Kodisang, Sphelele Mkhulise particularly.

There were no amount of threats settled on the Tshwane giants before the end and comfortably marched to victory with the return-leg this weekend.

Confirmed line-ups:

Mamelodi Sundowns: Williams, Morena, Kekana, Lebusa, Tiwani, Coetzee, Maboe, Allende, Rayners, Sales, Ribeiro.

Subs:  Onyango, Khoza, Modiba, Zwane, Kodisang, Mkhulise, De Reuck, Maseko, Shalulile
