Pirates seal Champions League group stage spot

Orlando Pirates advanced to the CAF Champions League group stages with a 1-0 win over Jwaneng Galaxy in the second preliminary round second-leg on Saturday evening.

Two changes for Pirates from the first-leg saw Gilberto come in for Relebohile Mofokeng and Kabelo Dlamini entered ahead of Thalente Mbatha.

There were few clear-cut penetrations to goal from both teams following kick-off as the travelling charges hoped to overturn the defeat in the first clash last weekend.

Nervous play at the back from the counterparts allowed the Buccaneers a route in with Gilberto and Dlamini aiming to find the net, but it was to no avail.

Jwaneng key man Thabang Sesinyi, who posed problems in the first-leg came inches to opening up the Buccaneers but were kept in check by the opposing man Sipho Chaine.

Pirates continued to come forward five minutes after the interval and had a fine header by Monnapule Saleng from a chipped cross by Gilberto draw a save from Goitsene Phoko.

Namibian international Deon Hotto, who scored in the first-leg came close to yet another effort in the tie from a smart one-two but Phoko rushed out to thwart him down.

Changes for the Buccaneers in the final quarter saw Mbatha come in for Gilberto before the exciting Mofokeng made way for Patrick Maswanganyi.

Phoko continued to bail out his charges around the last ten minutes when he stepped out to narrow the angle and repelled a rasping shot from Dlamini.

However, Pirates stole the show at the death with Saleng on hand to fire in a deft effort past Phoko to give his side outright victory and group stage entry.

Confirmed line-ups:

Orlando Pirates: Chaine, Ndah, Sesane, Van Rooyen, Hotto, Makhaula, Dlamini, Gilberto, Saleng, Maswanganyi, Mabasa

Subs: Buthelezi, Mofokeng, Sibisi, Mbatha, Maela, Kimvuidi, Rasebotja, Moleleki, Radiopane.
