Petro de Luanda end CT City's CAF CL journey

Cape Town City were eliminated from the CAF Champions League after a 4-0 loss on aggregate to Petro de Luanda following a 1-0 defeat in the second-leg of the second preliminary round on Friday evening.

The Citizens made six changes from the 3-0 loss in the first-leg, as Mpho Makola, Mduduzi Mdantsane, Thabo Nodada, Wayde Lekay, Jordan Bender and Relebogile Mokhuoane were brought in.

The sides were up for the game in the early stages, as they tussled for an early goal but Petro were more aggressive as on 19 minutes they forced a save out of goalkeeper Darren Keet low at the near post.

City remained in the game and they had a good chance to break the deadlock ten minutes before the half-time break from set-piece on the edge of the box after their former goalkeeper Hugo Marques was cautioned for a handling a ball outside the box but they could not capitalise.

The visitors, however, gained momentum and Kajally Drammeh had their first shot on target shortly before the interval straight down the throat of Marques.

Eric Tinkler's charges continued to put Petro under pressure in the early stages of the second stanza and with ten minutes played from the restart, Makola had a chance to break the breaking with a looping strike that sailed over the crossbar.

However, the Angolan side came back into the contest after the hour-mark, as they forced City to spend more time defending, with Taariq Fielies standing out at the back.

The South African side threw everything at Petro in the closing stages and Makola had another chance to pull a goal back in the last five minutes from a free-kick outside the box but he ballooned his effort over the crossbar.

City went on to concede two minutes later, as they lost the second-leg 1-0 and bowed out of the tournament with a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

Petro qualified for the Champions League group stages.

The Citizens, meanwhile, will have another chance to redeem themselves, as they dropped down to the CAF Confederation Cup additional second preliminary round.
