CONFIRMED | Sundowns, Pirates learn CAFCL opponents

DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have learned their opponents for the upcoming season's CAF Champions League.

In the competition's draw held on Tuesday, Sundowns are exempt from the preliminary round of matches, being within CAF's top-ten ranked teams.

That means Sundowns will face the winner of the first preliminary round clash between Bendji of Gabon and Bumamuru from Burundi in the second preliminary round of the continental competition.

The Brazilians were knocked out of the 2022/23 edition on goal difference without having lost a single match. Sundowns are the last South African team to win the prestigious trophy, having lifted it in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane.

Meanwhile, Pirates make a return to continental football and will take on Comoros outfit Djbal FC in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The Buccaneers famously lifted the 1995 Champions League and were beaten by Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the Champions League final in 2013. The 2023 Nedbank Cup winners also lost out on CAF Confederations Cup title to Tunisian side Etoile Sahel in 2015.

Elsewhere, Nedbank Cup finalists Sekhukhune United will face Young Buffaloes from Swaziland in their first ever CAF Confederations Cup campaign.

DStv Premiership third-place finishers SuperSport United are exempt from the first preliminary round of matches and take on the winner Between Gaborone United of Botswana and ASSM Elgeco Plus of Madagascar in the second preliminary round.
