Johnson believes Al Ahly holds edge over Sundowns

Former assistant coach Cavin Johnson has tipped Al Ahly to have the edge over Mamelodi Sundowns after the two sides were drawn in Group B for this season's CAF Champions League.

Johnson opined that although there are no clear-cut favourites in the group, the Egyptians might hold an edge.

"It's difficult because from three seasons ago Ahly won it twice in a row, and were finalists last year," Johnson tells KickOff.

"Sundowns meanwhile, since three seasons they've been here and there.

"But the thing is also that they beat Ahly twice, drew one, but they never went any further than the semi-finals of the competition.

"They never went to the final. So that's the biggest thing that Sundowns wants to do, they want to get to the final.

"And being at Ahly, I know they only want to be in the final.

"And they've got a new coach now, they've bought some new players, they look like they are on right track.

"Same as Sundowns they are currently winning their games, but it's different competitions hey, the Egyptian league I think it's a lot stronger than the PSL.

"Our league has taken a little bit of deep; I think.

"But Sundowns they have good tactician there in Steve [Khompela], Manqoba [Mnqithi] and Rhulani [Mokwena].

"In the SADC region, Sundowns is the only team that people rely on.

"No disrespect to Ahly, Sundowns has a good record currently against Ahly.

"But the fact that Ahly were in the last Champions League final gives them an edge.

"I don't think Motsepe will spend more money if they don't win the Champions League Sundowns."
