'To win CAFCL, you definitely need a bit of luck'

An Orlando Pirates legend believes the current team will need a bit of luck to replicate the success enjoyed by the Class of 1995 squad in their CAF Champions League campaign.

Gavin Lane, who was part of the 1995 Pirates side that won the Champions Cup that year, is fully behind the men in Black and White.

This season, they have already reached the quarter-finals of the competition, though they still have one last group stage match to play against Al Ahly.

"It's great to see South African clubs performing well in Africa. Pirates are playing some attractive soccer," says the man who used to be fondly known as 'Stability'.

"In fact, many South African teams are playing well, and Pirates are certainly on form at the moment.

"I know they had a setback recently in the league against Cape Town City, but they are still doing exceedingly well.

"However, winning the Champions League also relies on the luck of the draw. You have to face decent teams, while avoiding the strong favourites.

"It's always challenging to play away in a hostile environment. Hopefully, they will draw a favourable opponent, where the pitch is in good condition. Based on their current performance, it looks quite possible.

"To win the CAF Champions League, you definitely need a bit of luck. For example, during our 1995 campaign, we scored late goals in numerous matches.

"I remember there was one game where we were drawing, and I scored a late winner to advance us to the semi-finals," the former centre-back adds.

Lane also pointed out to Jerry Sikhosana's famous strike that sealed victory against ASEC Mimosas away in Abidjan, claiming a 1-0 win after drawing the home leg 2-2.

"That was right at the end. Sometimes, you just need a bit of luck in life.

"It's encouraging to see that the current Pirates team has players who are scoring goals, a midfield that works extremely hard, and a defence that isn't conceding unnecessary goals. The backline is nice and tight.

"I truly believe that with this combination, they can go all the way and lift the cup."

Bucs' match against the Team of the Century at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday kicks off at 18:00.
