The Brazilians had it easy in their passage into the group stages after dismantling Seychelles part-timers La Passe 15-1 on aggregate with both legs played at Loftus after the Indian Ocean islanders choose to play their home game in Tshwane.

According to the CAF 5-Year Ranking used in determining the seeded clubs ahead of the group stages, Sundowns found themselves falling into Pot 2 with 46 points and were going to face any of Al Ahly (78), Wydad Casablanca (71), Esperance (58), and Raja Casablanca (54).

They have now been handed Al Ahly again.
