Scrutiny work on Pirates done

Orlando Pirates will have been viewed to detail by their Algerian opponents MC Alger ahead of the two clubs' CAF Champions League quarterfinals meeting.

The first leg takes place in Algiers on April 1 (21:00) after the FIFA calendar break with the return scheduled for Orlando Stadium a week later.

Such is the weight of these two legs that it will carry prizemoney of USD1,2 million (approx. R22 million) for the winners as they proceed to the semi-finals.

CAF has already confirmed that Sudanese referee Mahmoud Ali Mahmoud Ismael will handle the whistle for the first leg.

The first assistant will be another Sudanese, Mohammed Abdullah Ibrahim, while the other end will have Abdul Razzaq Ahmed from Djibouti for an all-Arabic-speaking nationals' line-up.

Beyond that, the Algerians have gone to town in digging deep into the functionality of Pirates, who overcame another Champions League quarterfinalists Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday in the domestic league.

This website has been informed by contacts in Algeria that MC Alger fancy their chances and with that are detailing their opponents to the dot for the match against Pirates, whom they also respect.

With access to the Soweto giants' footage easier, the club's analysis team has gone deeper than ever in breaking down Jose Riveiro's men.

MC Alger have taken notes of how Pirates came to Algiers and took all three points from CR Belouizdad in November during the group stage, before also winning at Orlando.

They have given attention to the 20 matches played by Bucs since their last visit to Algeria and had people planted for the game against Sundowns on Sunday.

The Algerians will have 16 days to plot for Jose Riveiro's men with the benefit of having none of their players going away for international duty during the current FIFA break.

Pirates have won four, drawn three and lost only once against Algerian opposition throughout their history in CAF Inter Club competitions.

They have met CRB, USM Alger, ES Setif, and JS Saoura.

Just like Pirates, MC Alger have only been kings of the continent once before (1976).

They have veteran Tunisian tactician Khaled Ben Yahia as head coach.
