Mokwena gets candid on his biggest disadvantage as Sundowns head coach

Head coach Rulani Mokwena candidly revealed how he overcomes a lack of playing experience to get the best out of his players as Mamelodi Sundowns convincingly advanced to the CAF Champions League semi-finals on Saturday.

Sundowns came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 second-leg win at home over Algerian side CR Belouizdad at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Goals by Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena saw the Brazilians advanced to the competition's final four with a dominant 6-2 aggregate score over their North African opponents.

Speaking after the final whistle, a candid Mokwena revealed how he navigates one of his perceived weaknesses as a manager.

"My biggest disadvantage is having not played professional football," Mokwena said post-match.

"Some of these things I have not lived. So, I have huge expectations but from a psychological perspective I can just imagine how difficult it is.

"So, I have a reliance on speaking to the players where I have to talk, feel and sense where they are and what they think about the game.

"Then try to be very emotionally sobre, so the feeling I got in the first half is that we were closer to scoring than they were.

"I thought we were in control and the only disappointment of the first half was the extra five minutes after they scored where emotionally, we were rattled a little bit.

"Fortunately, we didn't bleed a lot around the box, because if you bleed a lot around the box against a North African side, they get free-kicks, corner-kicks and they smell blood.

"Then they go for the second and that could have complicated issues.

"But, after that, we stabilised ourselves again with the senior players showing very good leadership.

"We scored a very good goal from Mshishi [Themba Zwane] and then at half-time we had to talk about a couple of things.

"At half-time, we made a couple of tweaks to our build-up. But well done to the players, well done to the football club and the fans.

"I thought they were good today and carried us in moments where we needed them."

Sundowns next travel to AmaZulu in a DStv Premiership clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
