2013 CAFCL runner-up: Africa not ready for PSL rhythm

A former Orlando Pirates star, who played in the 2013 CAF Champions League final against Al Ahly, has sounded a warning to the rest of Africa ahead of the inter-club semi-finals.

All three South African clubs that made it out of Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup group stages have progressed to the semi-finals.

Furthermore, Bafana Bafana have qualified for the Africa Cup Of Nations taking place at the end of the year in Morocco, whilst also being on the verge of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following their 1-0 victory over defending champions Zamalek, Stellenbosch FC will now face Tanzanian giants Simba in the Confed Cup semis, while Sundowns and Pirates will battle the Egyptian duo of Al Ahly and Pyramids FC.

"We've got another rhythm that the African nations are not ready for," declares former Bucs winger Tlou Segolela.

"We are fortunate to have Hugo Broos, who has introduced another rhythm of making sure we make use of opportunities. He never categories people; he gives everybody a chance. As long as you are up to the task, you will get the opportunity.

"Now our PSL players understand how to play away games, now they know how to play for results. Compare the Sundowns of Rulani Mokwena and today's Sundowns, you will see that today's Sundowns know how to play for results.

"Before, it was all about flair and winning with style, while at the same time, you had to get maximum points.

"South African teams can reach both finals. Even Stellenbosch. At this stage, it's all about playing to win," he continues.

'Sox', as he is affectionately known, notes how Al Ahly know very well how to navigate the crucial stages of the Champions League.

"In the semi-finals, it's all about the mental strength. You should be willing to dig deep. Avoid one-on-ones against our keepers at all costs.

"Everything is going our way in football, and it's not an overnight thing. This was planned a long time ago through hard work."
