Bucs braced for Confederation Cup challenge

A number of surprise results in the African Champions League competition has seen some top names slip down into the continent’s secondary tournament and lined up as opponents for Pirates.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly are one such side after they lost on penalties to Moghreb Tétouan of Morocco. Tunisian side Esperance, who Bucs beat in the semifinals of the 2013 Champions League, are another team into Tuesday’s pot.

They missed out on the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2009 after losing on away goals to Sudanese side Al-Merrikh.

Raja Casablanca, conquerors of Kaizer Chiefs, have also slipped into the secondary competition following a 4-4 aggregate draw with defending Champions League holders ES Setif of Algeria that was followed by a 4-1 penalties loss.

Another top Tunisian side, CS Sfaxien are also in the pot after they lost on penalties to unheralded MC El Eulma of Algeria.

Stade Malien have been top performers on the continent in recent years but they lost 4-3 on aggregate to TP Mazembe and could face Pirates.

Other teams potentially in the draw for Bucs are Congo-Brazzaville side AC Leopards, who they met in the 2013 Champions League, Guinea side AS Kaloum and SM Sanga Balende from DR Congo.

The eight sides who have progressed through the Confederation Cup to date will be drawn against one of the sides that have dropped into the competition from the Champions League.

The victors of those ties, to be played the weekends of May 15-17 and June 5-7, will enter the group stages.

Of the eight sides that have qualified for the Champions League group stages, remarkably only TP Mazembe are from outside of north Africa.

There are three from Algeria - ES Sétif, MC El Eulma, USM Alger, two from Sudan in Al-Hilal and Al-Merrikh, and one each from Egypt (Smouha) and Morocco (Moghreb Tétouan)
