Eric Tinkler: Orlando Pirates should be competing for League

Despite doing well in Africa, Pirates have been struggling to get results at home and have already been booted out of the MTN8 by Ajax Cape Town. They also lost their first League game against SuperSport United in Polokwane recently.

Tinkler has refused to blame fatigue as their undoing and is now calling on his players to display the same character in the PSL that they have been showing on the continent.

“We can’t be using fatigue as an excuse. The more we talk about it, the more we give the players excuses,” says Tinkler.

“I have tried to explain to the players that you can’t use that as an excuse. You have to come with the same motivation, the same character and same belief you have in Africa and bring it to the League performances.

“We can do it because we’re not only competing with the best teams in Africa, but beating them. If we take that performance to the League, we should be up there fighting for the League, which I believe we can do,” he adds.

Pirates are set to host Chippa United at Orlando Stadium in their next Absa Premiership match on Tuesday evening. Tinkler is confident that his team will start scoring goals against the Chilli Boys.

“What is important now is to bounce back against Chippa. The performance has not been bad though people are talking about inconsistency.

“But I don’t believe that’s true, there has been consistancy but we’re only struggling to score goals and once or twice when we made errors we got punished for those errors,” explains the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.
