Eric Tinkler urges CAF participation from PSL teams

The Buccaneers defeated AS Kaloum 4-1 on Saturday, to win 6-1 on aggregate, in their third-round play-off match and ensured that the country keep four teams in CAF competitions in 2017.

The former Bucs assistant says he knows the chairman's desires of winning the CAF Champions League for a second time, and will therefore aim to go on and lift the Confederation Cup.

“We know the chairman wants to be in this competition. The chairman has always stated that he wants to win the CAF Champions League again.

"The club has never won the Confederation Cup, so we would like to try and achieve that.”

Tinkler believes it is within PSL teams' best interest to fight their way through these continental competitions in order to improve the country's standard of football.

“Pirates keep the flag flying high and I'm very proud of that.

"I have always believed that all South African teams should take this competition serious because this is where we contest against the other African nations,” says Tinkler.

“This is where you want to be, you want to be on top of Africa you need to be playing week-in and week-out, and comparing yourself to them so that you know where to improve."

The ex-Banana Bafana midfielder also added that he doesn’t mind his players expressing themselves, after they were 'showboating' in their 4-1 win over Kaloum.

“I always stated that I want the players to express themselves. As long as they express themselves within our plan and strategy, that's in the right areas and right places.

“I think that's what we saw against AS Kaloum, when they expressed themselves they must also do something positive towards the team at least, and not just as an individual.

“That's what it is important and players must understand that. We all want to play beautiful football, but as coaches we are not judged by beautiful football,” he concludes.
