Orlando Pirates get AS Kaloum in CAF Confederations Cup

The Buccaneers are one step away from the group stages, but in front of them is an opponent they will know little about.

They did manage to avoid some of the continent’s giants in the draw, which sees them go up against the 12-time and current Guinea champions.

Association Sportive Kaloum are based in the capital of Conakry and although they were formed in 1958, it is only in the 1980s where they emerged as a force in their country.

They dropped into the Confederation Cup after losing to Algerian side USM Alger in the last round of the Champions League competition, having seen off Sewe Sports of Ivory Coast and Zesco United of Zambia in the earlier rounds.

They have been forced to play their home games at neutral venues because of the Ebola virus.

Other play-off ties see a mighty battle between Egyptian giants Al-Ahly and Tunisian side Club Africain, while Raja Casablanca of Morocco, who dumped Kaizer Chiefs out of the Champions League, take on Étoile du Sahel from Tunisia.

Pirates will be away for the first leg on the weekend of May 15-17, before they host their Guinea opponents on the weekend of June 5-7.
