AS Kaloum, or ASK as they are also known, were founded in 1958 under the name Conakry I, winning three League titles before changing name.
They have won nine League titles since, and are the reigning champions of the local Guinean League, Ligue 1.
Based in the Guinean capital city of Conakry, Kaloum play out of the 25 000-seater Stade 28 Septembre yet have been forced to play in neutral venues due to the recent Ebola outbreak, and are currently under the guidance of Ivorian coach François Zaoui.
ASK find themselves in the Confederation Cup after being ousted from the Champions league by Algerian side USM Alger, losing 2-1 away while not doing enough with a 1-1 draw at home. In previous rounds, ASK dispatched Zambia’s Zesco United and Sewe Sports of Ivory Coast to secure their progress in the competition.
Kaloum’s record in African competition is less than impressive: they have reached the Champions League on three separate occasions (1997, 1999 and 2008), yet exited at the group stage each time, while also being knocked out of the 2006 CAF Confederation Cup at the first hurdle.
ASK currently lie eighth in their local League standings with three wins from their nine matches thus far, having played two matches less than leaders Horoya, and have managed just two wins from their previous eight matches in all competitions.
Pirates will travel to Guinea for the first leg of tie on the weekend of May 15-17, before hosting the return leg on the weekend of June 5-7.
