Tinkler's City job on the line? Comitis breaks his silence

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has shed some light on the future of head coach Eric Tinkler, who looks on course to lead the side to yet another Top Eight finish.

Last season, City managed to finish in the top four after acquiring 45 points. This time around, they are currently in seventh spot on the DStv Premiership log table with only two matches remaining.

They have gathered 39 points so far.

Tinkler has managed to collect 10 wins from the 28 league games played.

Comitis rubbishes growing rumors about the former Bafana Bafana midfielder's job at the club being on the line.

"Eric still has one year left on his contract and we are very happy to continue with him. We're building the squad for the new season," Comitis tells KickOff.

The club supremo added: "And we know we have to balance the transfer of players with the results and, at this stage, I think we didn't get it right. We did very well on the transfer market, we looked promising from Christmas, and then after that, we looked like we took a downturn."

Comitis believe the team is well poised for a top-five finish.

"I think the team is stable again and I think we still got enough to finish in the top five. But we're certainly not happy with that and the intention for the new season is to rebuild and bring in some experienced players again into the squad and start to challenge again for things.

What about reinforcements as preparations begin for the 2024/25 campaign?

"As for players we might bring in or sign for next season, that depends again on what players we bring in. I mean, at the end of the day, the players understand performance is everything.

"Sometimes we push players too quickly into the line-up and they are not ready for that.

"So, we have to be realistic and, at the same time, they need to have some experienced players around where you can then allow the younger players to be a bit more structured."

City next face relegation-threatened Richards Bay FC at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, before hoping to somewhat spoil the party at champions Mamelodi Sundowns on the last day of the season.
