Cape Town City boss ends Mayo speculation

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has confirmed that striker Khanyisa Mayo will be staying with the club next season amid interest from both locally and abroad.

Mayo has been the subject of speculation about his future at City for the past two seasons.

The Bafana Bafana has been linked to several clubs, both in South Africa and Europe, including from the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.

However, Comitis has assured the Citizens fans that the Mthatha-born lad will be staying with his club and remains part of his side's ambition to achieve silverware next season.

Cape Town City finished sitting in fifth position on the DStv Premiership log, having amassed 45 points, this past campaign.

"For sure)," Comitis said matter-of-factly, responding to a KickOff.com query about whether his talisman is staying on.

"Why not? We need to keep going and we're gonna build on this (the win against Mamelodi Sundowns). We didn't win much silverware and therefore to be able to at least finish on a high is something to take home and to get us going next season.

"So, we'll carry on next season where we left off," he added.

Head coach Eric Tinkler will be happy to go to next season with the backing of his boss, despite not having achieved any silverware this past season. However, nothing is ever cut-and-dried in football, with club bosses known to say one thing and do the other, especially in the local game.

"Eric still has a contract and we are happy with him," Comitis added.

Good news is that the team has qualified for next season's MTN8, where they meet Sekhukhune United in the quarterfinals.
