Comitis: City too good for play-offs

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has finally opened up about the team's current position on the Betway Premiership table.

With 16th place seemingly already decided following Royal AM's troubles, the Citizens are currently in a fierce battle to avoid the play-off spot with SuperSport United and Richards Bay FC.

City find themselves in 14th spot, level on points with 13th-placed Natal Rich Boyz, who have a played a game less, while SuperSport sit in the play-off spot but are two games behind.

According to Comitis, SuperSport are expected to forfeit one of their two outstanding games due to not meeting the Premier Soccer League's requirements in their game against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

SuperSport failed to provide a backup generator for the match against Golden Arrows. The match was abandoned at halftime with the score tied 1-1.

PSL regulations require each club to have a backup generator in case of power outages and load shedding.

"Everything is in the right place," Comitis tells KickOff.

"This team is too good for play-offs. We've got four games remaining, and we're going to go out and show we're supposed to be in the PSL.

"We are not worried about SuperSport; they have one game on hand, not two games, the other game, the generator didn't work, and the rule is clear: the matter is with the DC, and Golden Arrows should get those points. That's what the rules say unless we start bending the rules.

"So we are not going to the play-offs, and that's it."

Comitis also explained to this publication how the Citizens found themselves at the bottom of the log table this season.

"The team has too many new personalities, maybe that was the problem. They took too long to realise how to play with each other. And now that it's coming right, it looks like it's late, but it's never too late there are four games, and two wins after that, and we're out of danger.

"The changes in the coaching department helped because it allowed the players to be more relaxed and to express themselves.

"Both of my other coaches were good coaches, were top coaches [Eric Tinkler and Muhsin Ertugral], but the situation and the environment required calm and patience. Our players are up for a fight."

Comitis also explained the reasoning behind adding coach Roger De Sa and star player Thulani Serero to the team.

"Roger is a very good friend of mine; his calming effect has brought a lot of confidence, and he's brought a lot of experience, so I think we made a very good decision bringing him on board.

"Diogo is our head coach, we've got four games, then we will talk after that. And Serero, there will be a moment where we will see why Serero is here. I don't regret the signing, he's been great."
