'That was Cardoso's thinking'

Yet another former Mamelodi Sundowns star has reacted to the Tshwane giants' giant leap into the next stage of the CAF Champions League after outmanoeuvring Esperance in the quarterfinals.

Sundowns booked their spot in the semi-finals after edging Esperance 1-0 on aggregate, following a hard-fought goalless draw in the quarter-final second leg in Tunisia on Tuesday.

The Brazilians got their revenge on The Red and Yellow, who knocked them out in the semi-finals of the same tournament last season.

What made the victory sweet for the men in White and Blue is that they did so with head coach Miguel Cardoso, who was on the opposite side for Esperance last season.

Following a close contest in Rades, KickOff.com touched base with Brent Carelse to get his thoughts on his former team's achievement.

"They played a good game, I think they deserve to be in the semi-final definitely. Overall, not only the coach but the other players as well, as a team, they knew what to do," said the ex-midfielder.

"That's what happens in the CAF Champions League, especially when you play over two legs. You have a job to do and if you do the job, you get the result. I think that's what his (Cardoso) thinking was, it helped the team."

It appears Cardoso is a type of coach able to play for a result and get the job done.

The Brazilians have struggled to reach the final of the prestigious competition under the likes of Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi, even during their tenure as co-coaches.

Carelse, however, suggested it is hard to compare currently whether the Portuguese tactician has an upper hand over his predecessors.

"It's difficult to compare because those coaches also went to the semi-finals. But look, he's been getting results and that's what the team and supporters want, you keep everybody happy," Carelse added.

Sundowns have set up a semi-finals meeting with holders Al Ahly, with the first leg scheduled for Good Friday, 18 April, in Tshwane.
