Wydad Athletic Club has reportedly appointed a Moroccan coach amidst the challenges faced by South African tactician Rulani Mokwena in securing favorable results.
The Red Castle have encountered struggles recently, having gone several matches without a victory. Their most recent disappointment was being eliminated from the Throne Cup after a 1-0 loss to Moghreb Atletico Tetuan in the Last 16 stage.
In the wake of poor performance, Wydad management had reportedly sat with Mokwena to talk about his future with the club. Reports indicated that the club's disgruntled board members did not want the coach to continue after the cup elimination.
Nonetheless, after an extensive meeting that supposedly took place on Sunday, it is reported that the 38-year-old man will be permitted to retain his position until the end of the season.
The decision to keep Mokwena was reportedly influenced by concerns over financial losses, as the club would have to compensate him for the three-year contract he signed at the beginning of the season.
Now, according to 365scores.com, Wydad president Hicham Ait Menna has decided to appoint former club assistant coach Mohamed Amine Benhachem as their sporting director. The report has highlighted that this move is intended to reinforce Mokwena's technical team and enhance performance.
Benhachem served at the club as an assistant manager from May to June 2023. He has also managed teams such as FUS Rabat. His most recent position was as the head coach of Botola club Renaissance Zemamra.
Furthermore, it is reported that Benhachem will supervise the Reds' squad and be responsible for recruiting new players. Mokwena's team currently occupies third place in the Botola Pro League standings with five matches left in the season. Their upcoming league fixture will be against Raja AC on Saturday as they aim to qualify for next season's CAF Champions League edition.
