Comitis reveals R10m shortfall that makes him grateful to Khoza

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has played down Betway's sponsorship of the PSL after his club was barred from being sponsored by SportPesa, a sports betting company, by the League.

The Citizens acquired the sponsorship from SportPesa in 2018 and had already printed the shirts with the company's logo, but a legal battle ensued with the League, and the club eventually relented.

The PSL put it to City that no club was allowed to sign a sponsorship deal with a sports betting company without their permission.

At least until they had investigated the issues of sports betting, an investigation that reportedly did not take place.

After the matter appeared before arbitration, the Mother City outfit were threatened with expulsion or relegation, should they not follow a directive in the NSL rules.

City had no choice but to fold the SportPesa sponsorship.

Six years later, the PSL has itself concluded a sponsorship deal with a sports betting company Betway, worth R900 million, for three years.

Comitis was asked his feelings on the advent of the Betway Premiership.

"I would congratulate Betway, it's been a marvelous stepping for them. They are a strong player in the market, possibly the leader in the market. I think the PSL is a fantastic platform, it's going to work for them. They are very enthusiastic to activate the product and bring something new," Comitis said on Metro FM Sports Amplified.

"We're grateful that the chairman [Dr. Irvin Khoza] was able, in a short period of time, to turn around the sponsorship of that size, it's a remarkable feat. If you can understand that without that, we're talking about clubs that are already on the breadline of being able to pay their expenses and players.

"It would have taken R10 million out of each one's coffer, for the year. It's not something that can be scoffed at and how the chairman managed at such a short space of time, for corporate to spend that kind of money, is an absolute marvel."

The Betway sponsorship of the PSL comes shortly after Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs acquired sponsorship from sports betting company SuperSportBets, while Golden Arrows also sealed a 10Bet sponsorship deal.
