'Maybe they needed to do some retrenchment' - Makola details shock CT City exit

Newly-departed midfielder Mpho Makola has given an insight into his sudden exit from DStv Premiership side Cape Town City.

The club announced that it had reached an agreement with Makola to mutually part ways on Tuesday's transfer deadline day.

The 36-year-old arrived at the Citizens in 2019 and made 94 appearances for the club.

The disgruntled former Orlando Pirates star hinted at mental health issues at the time of his departure.

"Eish I'm going to stay at home now and want to take a short break from football," Makola tells KickOff.

"I want to spend time with my kids and rest my head a bit."

Makola admitted that he may consider retirement after weighing up all of his options.

"I will see how things turn out as time goes on.

"But my body is still okay, it's 100%, I'm fit, I can go for another two seasons.

"But I will see because internally I'm not okay, but I will see how I feel as time goes on.

"I can't explain how the decision to release me came about. I think the coach [Eric Tinkler] and chairman [John Comitis] might be able to explain.

"It's not my fault, I don't think it's my fault as I haven't done anything wrong.

"I have always been a professional to the team, but like in any company maybe they needed to do some retrenchment or whatever.

"There is no animosity with the team for the decision they made.

"I've always been ready for such decisions because they are part of football.

"So I'm not disappointed, I'm not sad. I'm just happy I'm going to be spending some time with my kids I don't know for how long.

"Maybe up until such a time, I will decide whether I'm done with football.

"But if something comes up and it makes sense to me, I will take that offer because I'm fully fit.

"Even if they say come play tomorrow, I will go and play I will be fine."
