Bartlett a 'chef without proper ingredients' as Spurs' struggles continue

Head coach Shaun Bartlett has been left exasperated after his Cape Town Spurs side, clearly lacking in the required level of quality, suffered their seventh consecutive defeat in the DStv Premiership.

Bartlett's side gave up bragging rights as Cape Town Spurs suffered a 3-1 defeat to Cape Town City in a Cape Town derby at Cape Town Stadium in front of a boisterous... Cape Town crowd.

As a contest though, the absence of quality from the Urban Warriors - despite taking an early lead - perhaps diminished the intensity of the occasion.

Fans have led an outcry for quality signings after Spurs mostly retained the same squad that secured promotion last season, with a lack of talent acquired.

Bartlett admitted to his side's deficiencies after the match while refusing to shy away from bearing the brunt of criticism thrown at the club.

"It's like asking a chef to produce a great dish but you don't give him the proper ingredients, it's difficult," Bartlett said post-match.

"That's the major concern at this moment in time. I'm trying my utmost best with the technical team and other coaches to turn our fortunes around, because it's not the position we want to be in.

"For five years we've been fighting to be in the DStv Premiership and we wanted to make sure that we started on a better note.

"At this moment in time it's not the case, so we at a club have got to look at what is the problem at this moment in time.

"It's easy for me to take responsibility, that's not an issue, that's why I chose the job where nobody gave the job to me, I chose it.

"It's a thankless job because next week, when we win again all the players will get praised and I'll get pushed aside.

"At the end of the day, that's what I chose to do to be the coach of this club. When I came in the objective was to first save us from relegation, then get promotion, that's fine.

"But now it's not going as planned.

"Collectively the decision needs to be made how we are going to turn it around and what needs to be done."
