Bartlett responds to the crisis at Spurs

Cape Town Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett has responded to the dreadful start that his club has had which has ignited wildfire speculation about his axing.

Spurs have lost all their five opening games against TS Galaxy, Sekhukhune United, Polokwane City, Chippa United, and Moroka Swallows scoring twice and conceding 10.

While the club has offered support to the former Bafana Bafana striker, fact is that results are not forthcoming, and a solution is needed.

"It is a norm that if the results don't come then there will be a lot of speculation," says Bartlett.

"It is more to do with the basic understanding of the way we play.

"I don't think our players are doing everything possible to focus on that so there is a gap and that is the reality check and all the players have recognised that more work needs to be done.

"We are going to have to pick ourselves up now and there is no way we will put our heads down now with 25 games to play.

"I have been talking to management to see if there are possibilities of bringing other players in.

"We need to find solutions as quick as possible before the transfer window closes," he notes while responding to questions about the frustration of limited funding at the club.

"It is always going to be an issue.

"Even with what we achieved last season was an absolute miracle as far as getting promotion to the DStv Premiership.

"But then we also recognise that in our first season in the Premiership, we cannot just go crazy and spend millions and millions because that can backfire on you.

"We got to be a bit cautious but also recognise that we shouldn't lose the status of the Premiership and the best position for us will be 14th place so that we can stay another season in the Premiership and then get players that might be used to this level.

"We kept most players not because of loyalty of last season and the success but at the end of the day some players are not where they are supposed to be in terms of competing at this level.

"The spending?

"There are not many clubs in this country that can go and spend to be honest.

"Clubs don't have title sponsors and don't have the financial backing, so you get to make means with getting loans and using development players to make the best," says Bartlett.
