Supporters Forum: Cape Town City fan Donovan Bowers

In this edition of Supporters Forum, KickOff speaks to Cape Town City fan Donovan Bowers about his long-standing affair with the Citizens.

On Wednesday against SuperSport United, Bowers was chosen as the club's Fan of the Match.

Name of supporter?

"I'm Donovan Bowers, I'm 53 years old. I'm self-employed, I do bathroom renovations. I live in Valhalla Park next to the Cape Town International Airport."

Club supported?

"Before Cape Town City, I used to support Orlando Pirates, but after the stabbing incident that involved the then-club captain and one of the foreign players, that's when I decided, I'm not going to support you anymore."

How long supported?

"When Mpumalanga Black Aces sold to John Comitis and he brought Cape Town City here, this is when I decided, this is where I'm going to go.

"I used to watch Cape Town Spurs [Ajax Cape Town], but I didn't like the fact that they were a selling team, they groomed players only to sell them to other clubs. Though John Comitis is doing the same thing now, they (Ajax) were not grooming players to win things."

Are you happy with the bosses?

"Like they say, every house has its troubles. Whatever decision they make, they are not going to ask the fans if they are happy with it. They've already decided that around the dinner table.

"So I won't say I'm happy with the bosses, but that won't take me away from the club. If I look at other bigger clubs, they've got worse things going on."

Are you happy with the coach?

"Yes I'm happy with the coach, it's just that sometimes players don't play according to instructions, and then as fans we are quick to jump onto the coach.

"Yesterday against SuperSport we could have won the game 1-0. But the lapse in concentration, cost us two points. You can't blame the coach for something like that."

Are you happy with the players?

"Some players if it was up to me I'd get rid of them (laughs). Khanyisa Mayo, I saw how yesterday some of his teammates were arguing with him, once that happens, opponents pick up on it. So he is a youngster and he performs better if you bring him as a sub.

"Another one is Thabo Nodada. I think he's past his prime now. They've just given him another three years when it should have been only one year. He is not at his best anymore.

"Now they've signed Khanya Leshabela just because he played for Leicester City. Would you leave Leicester and come to Cape Town City? Something tells me there's something not good with you. Yesterday, he wanted to hold on to the ball for too long."

Who do you want them to sign?

"Most of the time the people that we sign are the people who have already made a mark in the league, and they come here with their prima donna attitude.

"Remember when it comes to Comitis, he only signs free agents. But I think Samir Nurkovic could have been a good striker for us. He can play the ball with his head and his feet. He runs into open spaces and does not stand in the middle of two defenders like Mayo did yesterday.

"And also, they shouldn't have allowed Lyle Lakay to go to Sundowns."

Your message to the team?

"Keep on doing what you are doing. We (are) battling to score goals but they are going to come. As fans, we are always behind you."
