Efstathiou: 'We've got nothing against Shaun'

Cape Town Spurs CEO Ari Efstathiou says the decision behind Shaun Bartlett's departure was purely a football decision while not wanting to overspend beyond the club's budget on new signings.

Bartlett's departure on Monday, comes after seven straight defeats so far this season to record the worst-ever start by a team to a top-flight campaign.

"Ja the head coach has left, we haven't decided yet who we are going to bring in," Efstathiou tells KickOff.

"I think everyone who knows football could see it was not working for whatever reasons. So, we need to do the best for this football club for it to move in a different direction.

"So, whoever is coming it's going to be a long-term appointment, we don't want to change coaches for the sake of changing coaches.

"We will bring whoever we believe is the right one. For now, our technical director is helping out.

"We've got nothing against Shaun, it's a professional decision, Shaun is a great person. He managed to do what other coaches didn't manage to do by promoting us to the PSL.

"We have to give him credit for that, he believed he could do it and he did.

"We've got nothing bad to say about Shaun, but football is football, and unfortunately it's about results.

"And we tried to support the best way we could. But at some point, your hand is forced by the results.

"Every player we signed it was always with the consent of the coach.

"We never signed a player without the coach and his technical team being in agreement.

"There are a lot of teams that sign players that they can't afford, then they don't pay the players.

"Those teams that sign players and not pay for them are breaking every single rule in the book.

"It's hard to compete in that space, to get players is not difficult but to pay them is harder.

"It's always been our principle in our business, it's how you operate.

"You can sign as many players as you want, and you can offer them as much money as you want but for three months you are not paying them so what's the point?

"But it seems a lot of clubs are getting away with that."

Spurs have lost all their first seven league matches this season.
