How a newspaper article helped Spurs defeat Pirates

Midfielder Keagan Buchanan has revealed why Cape Town Spurs teammates had extra motivation to overcome Orlando Pirates and collect a first win of the season in the DStv Premiership.

The Urban Warriors opened the scoring through Lubeni Haukongo before Aidan Moroole scored a second late into the first half.

The Buccaneers pulled one back through Evidence Makgopa and despite intense pressure, a resolute Spurs held on to keep all three points and seal a memorable victory.

Speaking to SuperSportTV after the match, Man of the Match Buchanan revealed how it was  a newspaper article that rallied his side to victory.

"We had to give them (Pirates) respect because they are a quality team but also not show them that we are intimidated," the midfielder said.

"I think there was a newspaper article where someone was quoted saying 'Its' a warm-up game for Pirates' because they had already won the Carling Knockout (last 16 tie against Spurs). The coach put that in front of us and said is this what you want people to think of us?

"Your family reads 'this is a team that's playing a warm-up game.' The boys were a bit riled up and took that and said, 'okay we need to show that we belong in this league.'

"For us that's been here for years, it's to encourage the younger ones and try to make it easy because I mean, coming into the league, it's not a nice way, you come in and you lose eight games.

"So we need to put in that mindset that they are good enough and that we can go on and survive."

Up next for Spurs is DStv Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, 8 November at FNB Stadium.
