Job magnet Middendorp in ‘dicey’ situation

The fact that Ernst Middendorp has suffered relegation in two seasons will not discount his value, with his future at Cape Town Spurs not firmed up.

Middendorp has failed to rescue Spurs from the drop after taking over in November, having also dropped down to the German fourth-tier league (Regionalliga Nord) with SV Meppen at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Spurs had 10 defeats and one win in 11 games at the time and reached the halfway mark with only four points, leaving them just as good as dead.

Try as they did under Middendorp, the damage had already been done, with history showing that no team has ever been able to survive after doing so bad in the first half.

Middendorp closed the curtains against his former employers Kaizer Chiefs in the last game of the season on Saturday at the DHL Cape Town Stadium.

What happens next with the German gaffer will be a toss of the coin considering how frequent he changes jobs and that he has never coached in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Middendorp is in his 19th job in the last 16years and since January 2020 has been with Chiefs, St. George in Ethiopia, Maritzburg United, Moroka Swallows, SV Meppen, Singida Big Stars in Ethiopia and Spurs.

The 65-year-old never stays for periods stretching up to six months without a job since getting into the coaching industry almost 40 years ago.

He has not had a fresh job from the start of the season since his first stint at Amakhosi back in 2005.

In South Africa, Middendorp has been with eight clubs in the DStv Premiership.

He has had four stints at Maritzburg, and been to Golden Arrows, Bloemfontein Celtic, Chippa United, Free State Stars, Chiefs (twice), Swallows and Spurs.
