Why Spurs could be already relegated?

For all the coaching changes that Cape Town Spurs have made this season, the club from the Mother City is still stammering towards becoming the worst to ever play in the PSL.

Thirteen games into the season, Spurs have already lost 12.

In the period since the DStv Premiership became a 16-team league no club has ever been able to move off the bottom and survive after recording as many as 12 defeats at this stage of the season.

A double figure number of defeats after 13 games or before Christmas has meant disaster with no escape route in all previous years.

Hellenic tragically lost 11 and only had two points at this stage in the 2003/04 season on their way down in the 2003/04 campaign.

Mpumalanga Black Aces had lost 10 after 13 games in the 2010/11 season and couldn't survive with four coaches taking charge that year.

They ultimately lost 23, which is the highest number of league defeats in the history of a single 16-team PSL league.

Polokwane City lost 10 before Christmas in the 2019/20 season and were relegated just like Baroka two years later.

Interesting is that Marumo Gallants went down last term having lost only lost 11 all season.

So, while there still remains 17 games to play, Spurs have sunk themselves into a pit that no club has ever been able to get themselves out of in the past and will need a miraculous rescue plan to stay up next season.

Ernst Middendorp's men play Mamelodi Sundowns next and will also have AmaZulu and Cape Town City before the end of the year.
