New Chippa assistant explains ‘demotion’

Thabo September has explained Chippa United's decision to move him to the position of assistant coach ahead of the new season.

The former SuperSport United player has been serving as a co-coach with Kwanele Kopo at the Chilli Boys since January, replacing Morgan Mammila.

Together, the coaching duo managed to save the club from relegation, with Chippa finishing 11 points above the drop zone.

According to a statement released by the club on Thursday, Kopo will now be the head coach and September will serve as his assistant.

September says he supports the club's decision as it will enable him to work with the club's DStv Diski Challenge side.

"It's not taking a backseat, it's a structure more than anything," September tells KickOff.

"We don't have an assistant coach, and we have to work with the DDC as well.

"Also it's because of the experience coach Kwanele has as a head coach.

"He was my head coach when I started coaching at SuperSport. We worked together. I was his assistant.

"And here at Chippa United I also work with the DDC, so being an assistant coach in the first team frees me to work on both sides."

Chippa finished the 2023/24 Season sitting in 12th position n the DStv Premiership log table, and only four points saved them from the PSL play-offs.
