‘Performance matters more than the name of the club’

Super Eagles keeper Stanley Nwabali has been told to be appreciative of that his chance in the national team came from playing for a modest DStv Premiership club.

Nwabali is in the books of Chippa United and with his rise has attracted interest from Europe and the Gulf Region.

The 27-year-old joined Chippa in October 2022 and the 24 games that he has played have been enough to earn him a first-choice place for the Super Eagles and ignite interest from abroad.

Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise have been mentioned just like clubs in France and Saudi Arabia.

"When it comes to goalkeeping it doesn't matter where you are playing your club football," argues former Super Eagles goalkeeper William Okpara who spent most of his playing career at Orlando Pirates.

"As a keeper you are there for the team, so it is a collective effort.

"The question now should be about the respect and trust from his defenders and if this is there then he is good to play.

"Maybe after the Nations Cup, he might move but now we must respect the fact that he is playing in South Africa.

"There is nothing wrong in playing your football in South Africa for a club like Chippa United.

"The name of the club doesn't matter because what counts is the performance.

"He is a good choice to play for the Super Eagles as long as he is not constantly making mistakes.

"The fact that he has been selected while playing for Chippa United tells you that the selectors watch the PSL and prioritise performance over the name of the club.

"Performance matters more than the name of the club.

"He might have not expected that he will play at the Nations Cup but now that he is there and playing then let him enjoy it.

"The boy is commanding his defence and is representing the country well," Okpara tells KICK OFF.
