PSL respond to Mpengesi statement

The Premier Soccer League have responded to the statement made by Chippa United chairman Siviwe Chippa Mpengesi about the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the local game.

Questionable officiating has been dominating the local football lately, and Mpengesi believes the PSL should implement the VAR.

In his statement, Mpengesi points out that in their two matches against AmaZulu FC and Moroka Swallows two of their goals were wrongfully denied which led the club to miss out on four points.

PSL official professor Ronnie Schloss says they concur with Mpengesi as VAR technology might improve the officiating in domestic football.

Schloss says it is not up to the league though to decide on such matters as all powers rest with the South African Football Association.

"As the league we don't appoint the referees so we can't do that," Schloss tells KickOff.

"It's the decision of the association because they appoint the referees. We don't appoint the referees we've got nothing to do with the referees. Safa are the ones who are appointing the referees.

"But yes we would like to see VAR introduced to avoid any confusion, as in other countries.

"Safa appoints the referees, Safa appoints the match commissioner."

Meanwhile, Schloss says there is nothing wrong with the Mpumalanga Stadium pitch in Hammersdale.

The Stadium hosted the Lamontville Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs league match on Sunday.

Amakhosi interim coach Cavin Johnson was not happy with the conditions at the Mpumalanga Stadium.

"Look, I was at that pitch a week before, and the pitch was in very good condition." Says Schloss.

"It had an astronomical amount of rain. It was in perfect condition before the game we inspected it with the municipality and everything was fine."
