To honour the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, who passed away on this day three years ago, an event will be held by the Shoes of Wisdom foundation as a symbol of spreading the spirit of goodwill.
The purpose of the event, which will be held today in Soweto, is to honour the late Shoes Moshoeu, as well as to promote and celebrate the culture of reading and story telling through sports, and to raise awareness about the Shoes collection drive #MoShoes4U. Reading and story telling will be done by footballers.
Shoes’ favourite colour was white and those attending the event have been encouraged to wear white. The event runs from 09h00 to 18h00.at 24479 Myeza Street in Diepkloof.
Former Orlando Pirates winger Dikgang Mabalane is on the board of foundation and explains what will happen at the event today.
“It’s a programme that we are starting. Basically it’s about mentoring the boy child and children. Our target is primary schools and we would like to have footballers to get rid of the notion that footballers do not read,” Mabalane says.
“I have always been sentimental when it comes to footballers and education, so it’s a drive towards that and this is what Shoes of Wisdom is about. Their vision and mission aligns with mine.
“This is something that started in October last year. In a nutshell it’s about reading through sports and mentoring children, mainly the boy child. This is something we’d like to drive.
“This was founded by Shoes Moshoeu, who is someone I looked up to and this is why I am part of this foundation. He is a legend and he was an avid reader and I would like to urge soccer players to get into reading and working with children.”
