Five times Percy Tau made Mzansi proud

Percy Tau has been linked with a transfer back to Africa as Egyptian giants as Al Ahly reportedly appear to be the leading candidates, Here's 5 moments when the Lion of Judah flew the SA flag high in Europe.  

What happened? 

Pitso Mosimane's side have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Tau from Brighton and Hove Albion, where he is set to sensationally reunite with his former coach. If this deal does happen, Tau would put an end to his 3-year journey in Europe.  

Many South Africans have plied their trade overseas but only a select few have had the chance to rub shoulders with the world best including stars like Paul Pogba, Kevin De Bruyne and many more.

Lion of Judah 3-year journey?  

Tau was signed for a record fee of €3.2 million (R55 million) in 2018 and spent his three years in Europe at four different clubs. In his short time there, the 27-year-old joined an elite list of Mzansi players who played in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.

Tau wins award 

The former DSTV Premiership Footballer of the Season stood out above his peers after winning the 2018/19 Proximus League Player of the Year, with dazzling performances for Belgian First Division B side, Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns attacker went viral after his performance against Pep Guardiola's side when he showed his 'Kasi flava' and dribbled past 2020/21 league winner Oleksandr Zinchenko, leading the Ukraine man to fall down.  

Lion of Judah rubs shoulders with the world's best 

The 2019/20 season was very eventful campaign for the forward as he starred in a UEFA Champions League draw against Real Madrid. Club Brugge drew 2-2 with the LaLiga giants in the Santiago Bernabéu and failed to qualify out of the group stages, after finishing third. 

The two teams that finished above them was Carlo Ancelotti's side and Paris Saint-Germain. 

After their exit, Tau's side were sent to the Europa League where the South African had the chance to play against Manchester United but his Belgian side ended up losing to Premier League giants in their two-legged tie.  

Did you know? 

According to the thesouthafrican, the Brighton man was bought for an undisclosed fee said to be in the region of £2.7 million (R50 million at the time), was a South African record for the sale of a domestic player.
