Lionel Messi's Nou Camp pictures torn down

Lionel Messi has ended his 21-year stay at Barcelona and the LaLiga side has quickly removed his long-standing picture from their mural at the Camp Nou! Here are pictures of the end of an era.

What happened?

Messi was in tears on Sunday after addressing a press conference to confirm his departure from his boyhood side and to say goodbye to his friends and teammates.

The 34-year-old completed his move to Paris Saint-Germain this week after parting ways with Barcelona and the club's groundsmen have moved quickly to remove all of the pictures of the Barca icon.

The mural?

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner was originally pictured with Gerard Pique, Marc-André ter Stegen, Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong but now Messi's image is replaced with a blank white wall.

This is not the first time that the club had to remove one of their stars after Luis Suarez was also taken off the wall in 2020 after securing a transfer to Atletico Madrid.

The photographs emerged after fans uploaded videos and pictures on social media of the Blaugrana's workers removing all of his pictures around the stadium.

However, the decision that left fans the most puzzled was their Dutch midfielder and German keeper's pictures were also being removed.

Who's going to replace the Argentine?

There are rumours that either Ansu Fati or Pedri will fill the talisman's void on the stadium. Both are candidates due to their highly-rated potential and the fact they are homegrown stars after graduating from the La Masia academy.

Messi career at Barcelona

The Argentine is the club's all-time top scorer and appearance maker with 672 goals and 305 assists in 778 games in all competitions. He ends his stay with the LaLiga side with more than 15 records.

Did you know?

Messi could have easily played for Italy as his dad, Jorge Messi, comes from a middle-class Italian origin.

Your thoughts, please?

What do you think about Messi leaving?
