South African footballers who love pets

Naturally, some people have a greater appreciation for pets, and we look at a couple of South African and DStv Premiership stars are proud dog owners.

They say a dog is man's best friend, and this saying probably dates back to a very long time ago but it's real essence cannot be disputed because dog's close relations with man have fostered a friendship and companionship with humans.

South African and Suwon FC striker Lars Veldwijk seems to have always had an appreciation for small dogs. The Korean League forward owns what seems to be a Samoyed, which is a breed of Northwest Russian and Western Siberian origins. They are also known to be one of 14 breeds with direct ties to ancient wolves.

These dogs are understood to have a life span of 12 to 14 years, they are typically known for being playful, friendly, stubborn, sociable, lively, and alert. Veldwijk has previously had a number of dogs as it is quite apparent on his social media and we would not be surprised if he would get another at some point.

Meanwhile, Baroka FC's Gerald Phiri has what seems to be either a pug or a bulldog, and both breeds of dogs are quite famous, particularly on television thanks to many cartoons including Tom and Jerry.

These dogs are known to be generally dependable and predictable, and they are family-friendly. Their people-oriented nature and temperament make them safe around children and they are believed to adore human attention.

Other loving dog owners include Moroka Swallow's Fawaaz Basadien, Multichoice Diski Challenge Orlando Pirates Reserves star Kagiso Madisha, and overseas-based striker Lyle Foster just to mention a few.

Did you know?

Although there's a wide range of fun facts about dogs, and one of them is that canines are thought to have a sense of smell that is 40 times better than humans, and just like people, they have a preferred paw (a hand).

Your thoughts, please?

How big of an admirer of dogs are you?
