Steve Komphela shares insight on two forms of racism

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has spoken out against racism, offering education on two types of racism that should never be tolerated.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the fore another global pandemic that continues to rip apart the unity and cooperation between many in South Africa and abroad.

Recent events have brought about a raging movement against racism, with prominent local sports people having broken their silence on how they have been impacted in various ways, not only within their careers but also in society.

Komphela, who is known to be passionate and outspoken on matters such as these, has since taken to his social media and used his platform to educate and rally victims of racism to kick out the "bloody monster".

"The topic on racism has always been very sensitive, and this bloody monster always manifests itself in two ways," said the 53-year-old in a video he posted on Twitter.

"The perpetrators are either doing it deliberately, which is conscious, and sometimes they are not even deliberate because it is in their system - they were brought up with that system embedded in them, which is unconscious.

"Now conscious or unconscious racism must be dealt with similarly, there has to be a conscious acceptance and an unconscious acceptance thereof.

"Conscious acceptance of racism, whether unconscious or conscious, the victim is left with no option but just to suffer; the unconscious acceptance of racism is where certain things are regarded as normal.

"No kind of racism – conscious or unconscious – must be tolerated or accepted, it is bloody bad, so we forever have to remain conscious that no unconscious or conscious racism has to be practised on any of us. Don't allow it."
