DStv Diski Shield Final match report Kaizer Chief v Stellenbosch 23 July 2022

Kaizer Chiefs secured the 2022 DStv Diski Shield with a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday afternoon.

There were no alterations from the Amakhosi following last weekend's win over Mamelodi Sundowns, while Stellies had Antonio Van Wyk and Jayden Adams back from National team duty.

Adams could've marked his return with the opener 10 minutes gone, but he dragged Liam de Kock's cutback wide of the mark.

Another opportunity was presented to Adams minutes to the half-hour mark from a delivery right of the six-yard area, but he volleyed in off the ground and over the top.

Stellies launched yet another scare right inside the closing minutes of the half when Devon Titus flashed a neat knockdown on the far side inches wide of target.

The Diski Challenge champions continued their dominant spell in the second half and came close to the lead when a first-time shot in the box from Van Wyk rattled the crossbar.

The Amakhosi had the lead 12 minutes in the second half after Mfundo Vilakazi pulled a cutback outside the danger area and curled into the top corner.

Chiefs, who were buoyed by a packed stadium, looked to double lead near the closing 20 minutes from a strong left-footed strike from a tight angle by Vilakazi but it was parried.

With the likes of Roy-Keane Avontuur on from the substitutes bench, The Maroons desperately started to probe a turnaround inside the final few minutes but to no avail as the Amakhosi stood tall.

A glorious opportunity for Stellies to draw level went abegging late on when Mervin Boij slammed a surging ball to the back-post way beyond the far corner of the net.

Chiefs doubled their lead seven minutes from time after Mduduzi Shabalala pounced on Puso Dithejane's shot that rebounded off the post and tucked into an empty net.

The Amakhosi successfully managed to run down the last few minutes of the match and in the end emerged victorious.
