Southwest made available 175 000 sq/m of used leather from hundreds of old leather seats from their fleet to their recently launched sustainability program titled “Project Luvseat”.
Two of an estimated 14 containers full of leather have already been distributed to Kenyan NGOs and enterprises to be recycled into soccer balls, amongst other things.
The company sees it as a long-term project aimed at enterprise development while equally raising awareness about the potential of recycling. It is estimated the 500 leather seat covers can make approximately 1000 soccer balls.
