My First Pay Cheque - Luyolo Mapolisa

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff catches up with former Lamontville Golden Arrows and Black Leopards star Luyolo Mapolisa who reveals how he spent his first ever football salary.

The 40-year-old retired left-winger and midfielder also played for the likes of FC Cape Town and Roses United.

Who you signed for?

"Juventus FC, a team from around here in Cape Town in Mitchells Plein. It was in 2002.

"In the PSL I started at Black Leopards in 2008. But I got my first pay cheque at Juventus."

How much was it?

"It was R400. I was just excited to have made a breakthrough in football. I didn't care much about money.

"I only started focusing on money at FC Fortune and FC Cape Town."

How I celebrated?

"Honestly I was too focused on my education back then, I was still at school.

"I just gave the money to my mom and told her; you will see what you do with it.

"I was still doing my matric, I was still in high school."

What did I buy with it?

"My mother gave me R50 and kept the R350. I spoiled myself with the R50 and bought some snacks for myself and my girlfriend. R50 was nothing, man."

Did it last you the full month?

"No way, my mom ended up asking, is this what they are going to pay you every month?

"My response was, Mom, I don't care much about your money I just appreciate the breakthrough.

"Those days our salaries came in envelopes. What helped those days were the winning bonuses.

"The bonus depended on what mood the bonus was in. Sometimes he would give us R300 and sometimes R500"
