Update on Du Preez's injury setback

Head coach Cavin Johnson has issued an update on the injury of attacker Ashley Du Preez, who was substituted in the first half as Kaizer Chiefs were held to a goalless draw by Polokwane City on Saturday.

The Soweto giants missed a chance to solidify their spot in the Top Eight of the DStv Premiership as they played to a 0-0 draw against Rise And Shine at FNB Stadium.

There was some concern among Amakhosi supporters when star attacker Du Preez was substituted after just 29 minutes of action, after what looked like an ankle injury.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Johnson provided an early update on the former Stellenbosch FC man's injury.

"Ja, Ash got a knock," the interim coach said, responding to a question by KickOff.

"And, in all respect to him, he couldn't run anymore. He thought it was more of an ankle, it wasn't the ankle.

"It was the toe. You know your set of toes, it was just above there. So, It could be a lot worse than we think. We need to be sure because the medical team said – and he also said – 'Coach, I can't go on any more', then we brought on Happy [Mashiane].

An injury to Du Preez would be a major setback for a side in need of goals in their last fixture of the season this weekend as he is the side's leading goal scorer this season, with six goals to his name across all competitions.

Chiefs are set to end what will go down as one of their worst seasons in the PSL era, where they find themselves battling for a Top Eight spot on the last day of the campaign.

With 25 goals scored from 28 matches, they are the second-lowest scoring team among the DStv Premiership's top 10 – only behind Polokwane City, who have netted 20.
