A new power shift after latest recruit at Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs could have introduced a new power dynamic, seemingly in place at Mamelodi Sundowns, where a head coach may not have a final say on the players brought in, this after the appointment of a new Head of Scouting and Recruitment, Thembela Maliwa.

The departure of Rulani Mokwena at Sundowns allegedly had to do with who had the power, between him and Sporting Director Flemming Berg, to make technical decisions, such as incoming and outgoing transfers.

Naturally, a head coach would recommend players he would like to work with, but the 37-year-old coach, unlike Pitso Mosimane during his time at Chloorkop, had no carte blanche on signings and players who should be released and kept at Masandawana.

It is believed such lack of control put him at odds with Berg and, in the end, the Dane had the final say.

Chiefs, who have roped in Maliwa from Sundowns, could be giving the former Cape Town Spurs head of scouting the power over any head coach, to make technical decisions such as transfer of players.

'Tera' has the mandate to "identify and bring in the players that will take Amakhosi back to the glory days", in his own words, per the club's official website.

Although he would be much involved with unearthing unknown talent, his scope as a Head of Scouting and Recruitment gives him much power at Chiefs.

Maliwa recounted an experience at Spurs (formerly Ajax Cape Town), where he had to overrule a particular coach, who had turned down an opportunity to sign Rivaldo Coetzee.

"I remember during my time at Ajax, there are players I thought I'd love to have but I missed, players like Mihlali Mayambela. He was at Old Mutual [Academy], I could not bring him," Maliwa said on Radio 2000, explaining that even scouts make mistakes.

"I missed [Ayanda] Patosi as well. He came to us for a trial, he was 15 years old. The coach didn't sign him. It was the same experience when Rivaldo came in, we almost lost him. But because I was the Head of Scout, I had to make the decision. He came three times and he was chased away three times.

"I saw him play at a school in Kakamas. We almost lost him because the coach said he's not good enough, I had to make my decision and say: 'Look, I'm the head scout, I have to make the decision and we're gonna sign him and we'll see what will happen'. And the rest is history."

'Tera' has suggested that new players signed by a club that has a scouting department, have to align with the philosophy outlined by the technocrats for the club rather than a head coach's philosophy, because "coaches come and go".

Maliwa also revealed that he has unearthed players such as Tashreeq Matthews [Sundowns], Luke Le Roux [Varnamo, Sweden] Jayden Adams [Stellenbosch] and Kegan Johannes [Sundowns], among a host of others, while they were still under 12s, in a programme he ran in Cape Town, in partnership with Ajax.
