'Chiefs is 'a club that he loves, so why move?'

CEO of ProSport International, Mike Makaab, who is the representative of rising star Samkelo Zwane, has given an update on the future of the 22-year-old after his noticeable lack of game-time at Kaizer Chiefs.

The emergence of Zwane was one of few silver linings in a disappointing 2022/23 campaign for Chiefs, one that saw them finish fifth on the standings without a piece of silverware to boast of.

The midfielder had come through the club's academy ranks and impressed in the DStv Diski Challenge team, prompting then-senior team head coach Arthur Zwane to take the gamble of promoting him.

The youngster went on to make 15 appearances.

His second season, however, would prove to be disastrous; Zwane did not start a single match for Chiefs the entire season, during Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson's respective tenures.

His absence has fueled rumours of a loan ahead of next season ... or even a permanent exit.

Speaking on Gagasi FM's ExtraTime, Makaab offered clarity on Zwane's immediate future.

"I think Samkelo will stay at Chiefs," he revealed.

"I think there will be an opportunity for the new coach to look at all of the players at the start of pre-season.

"If we (ProSport) believe that Samkelo is given an opportunity to fight for a place in the team, then why move? He's already made his debut at a relatively young age for a club like Kaizer Chiefs.

"It's a club that he's passionate about, it's a club that he loves, so why move?"

Chiefs are set to announce a new head coach in the shape of Tunisian-Belgian Nasreddine Nabi, who will be bringing with him his own technical team.

"I think the most important thing is, if there is any doubt that he'll get the right amount of game-time, it will be important for him to go out, even if it's on loan, and find a club that is giving him that game-time," Makaab added.

"But it's far too early, far too premature to be even thinking about that. The same goes for Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, Donay Jansen and Wandile Duba (all represented by ProSport)."

The Soweto giants are expected to report back to the Village next week to begin preparations for what promises to be an interesting new campaign for them.
