Chiefs climb to fourth with Stellenbosch scalp

Kaizer Chiefs climbed to fourth spot on the Betway Premiership table with a 1-0 win away to Stellenbosch FC on Friday evening.

Chiefs recalled Gaston Sirino in place of Mduduzi Shabalala while Thatayaone Ditlhokwe entered ahead of Bradley Cross, who dropped to the bench.

Sirino proved vital on four minutes when he launched a pin-point cross to the back-post for Glody Lilepo to head in the opener.

Lilepo caused the host a lot of problems through his overlapping runs in the channels and fancied a brace after firing a speculative shot across the face of the area.

Stellies were courageous despite trailing and had the opposite Bruce Bvuma on his toes through Devon Titus, Andre De Jong and Omega Mdaka.

The Soweto giants managed to hold the forth amidst pressure from the Maroons and entered the break in the lead.

Stellenbosch made a double change at halftime in new signing Lesiba Nku for Chumani Butsaka before Athenkosi Mcaba replaced Kyle Jurgens.

Lilepo got another chance to double his and the club's lead through a free-kick from the area, but slammed straight at goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

Chiefs penetrated effectively amidst the inability to bury the chances as Lilepo snapped another clear opening after meeting Sirino's pass.

Maroons began to push up given the underwhelming period, but final third entries proved inefficient with the channels of De Jong courted.

The pressure urged the Amakhosi to refresh personnel in the closing stages and threw on Tebogo Potsane for Sirino while Tashreeq Morris made way for Mduduzi Shabalala.

Pacey Pule Mmodi should've made it two in the last five minutes with a near post effort following a counter, but he slammed well of the mark.

The momentum shifted either end minutes to full-time, as the Amakhosi returned to get back to winning ways.
