What awaits Nabi at Chiefs

Nasreddine Nabi will get going in his new job as the head coach of Kaizer Chiefs with a mountain to climb in what awaits him ahead.

Nabi was finally confirmed by Chiefs on Sunday after joining the pre-season camp in Turkey, where they are spending just under three weeks, and must get his hands dirty in seeking to sort out all the issues at the club.

Firstly, the 58-year-old will be out to improve the awful returns of a bottom half finish last season under Cavin Johnson.

Amakhosi had their worst finish ever last term after ending on 36 points and getting a goal difference of minus five, which means they scored less than they conceded.

Beyond needing a lift, Chiefs is a team low on confidence and with a squad faced with questions ahead of at least 32 games that they will play in the new.

The Soweto giants will not feature in the MTN8 and so will have 30 league games, plus at least one match in each of the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup.

New goalkeeper coach IIyes Mzoughi has work to do with Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma and Karabo Molefe.

Chiefs used three keepers last season in Petersen, Bvuma, and Itumeleng Khune, and must now establish a first choice that will provide the foundation for their defence.

At the back, Edmilson Dove has been retained and so he will be the most experienced guiding Given Msimango, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Zitha Kwinika, Reeve Frosler and new left-back Bongani Sam.

Edson Castillo has stayed and must drive the midfield along with Yusuf Maart showing the proper direction to Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Samkelo Zwane, Mduduzi Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi, amongst others.

Tebogo Potsane, Mduduzi Mdantsane, Pule Mmodi and Sibongiseni Mthethwa all must do better.

Ashley Du Preez, Ranga Chivaviro and Christian Saile Basomboli will have no excuses for failing to score goals in abundance.

The new season will be the 10th that Chiefs will play since they last won silverware.

Nabi hasn't had the best of starts with his assistant Fernando da Cruz already linked with a return to Morocco.
