Speaking at the post-match press conference, Johnson admitted that his side still had more work to do if they hope to defeat a similar opponent in future.
"Last weekend we played a better game against Swallows," Johnson said.
"We were able to push the ball around because Swallows is like that as well, they are not losing their identity. But we played against a team that gives you a hard time, they play the second ball.
"We didn't play our best football but we were able to identify that, yes we can play and we can win against this type of opposition and when you do that everyone is happy because you get the three points, we go back home and we can take the game and we can analyse it and identify the moments where I think we could have been better.
"For example, I thought there were times where we could have killed the game when our centre-backs and our full backs and had the ball, where we could have played better coming out.
"But we always looked to want to play the through ball which was far too early because they (City) win the ball, they pump it upfront and they come at us again.
"In the second half we had to defend a lot. We has to do a lot of defending but did they have any clear cut chances against Bruce? I don't think so.

"In some moments, yes, I think we are getting there, but like I said if it was the same win we had against Swallows then we could say okay we are building on the type of play we have or the type of play we want to have going forward.
"But when you have to play against a team like this, it's a whole new perspective. We have to go back home and say okay how do we play against a team that plays like this because there could be one or two other teams that plays similar, that play the long ball and play on the second ball.
"So, we need to be able to do that, but we also need to make sure we are able to keep on stitching the Kaizer Chiefs cloth."
Chiefs return to DStv Premiership action when they take on Richards Bay at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 23 December.
