Blemishes for Chiefs keeper

Being the first choice since joining Kaizer Chiefs has meant Fiacre Ntwari will get considerable focus on his game than he has ever had in his career.

This is what Ntwari is facing with both praise and criticism coming his way as he goes about his duties at Chiefs and the Rwanda national team.

Of focal interest is that the towering goalkeeper has not kept a clean sheet for both club and country since making his debut for Amakhosi a month ago.

Nasreddine Nabi has trusted the 25-year-old with guarding the posts in the three league games played by Chiefs to date.

The 2-1 win over Marumo Gallants came without fault, just like the 3-1 victory against AmaZulu FC, before question marks were asked in the 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

How quick he released the ball in setting up counter-attacks wasn't perfect, just like the accuracy of his distribution along with his command in the box and communication.

After the three matches at the Soweto giants, Ntwari has gone away on international duty and was beaten thrice on Friday in the 3-0 AFCON qualifier loss to Benin.

The first was a header coming off a cross, which he initially went out for before retreating, leaving Steve Mounie with the easy task of just nodding it home.

Ntwari was then non-committal in conceding the second after staying rooted to the ground in being beaten with a low shot by Benin forward Andreas Hountondji.

For the third, he was beaten by a drive from outside the box.

So, it has been four games in a row without a clean for both club and country, conceding seven with Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen fighting for another slice in getting an opportunity.

Ntwari is in action again at home on Tuesday (18:00) against Benin, before he then gets on the four-hour flight from Kigali to Johannesburg hoping to be still in goals when Chiefs visit SuperSport United on Saturday for the Carling Knockout Last 16.
